Q&A

LED Light Units

Light Units

Q Why are LED Light Units suitable as light sources for machine vision?

A

The following characteristics of LED Light Units make them ideal as light sources for machine vision:

  • 1. Many lighting patterns can be designed.
  • 2. An LED Light Unit consumes little power and has a long service life.
  • 3. An LED Light Unit responds quickly
  • 4. The LED color can be specified.
  • 5. The total running cost is low.
  • 6. An LED Light Unit contributes to reducing the load on the environmental.

Light sources for machine vision are not used simply to view objects being inspected. They must also increase the stability of the machine vision system, and help improve productivity. LED Light Units provide these characteristics are ideal for illumination.

Q What points are important when observing an object?

A

The information acquired from imaging an object is a record of the differences in the light intensity across the observed object. Of this, the most important information is that on the density of the light that is obtained from the object on which light is radiated. The most important point in imaging is therefore to obtain the most stable lighting with the highest contrast at the target point on the observed object.

Q What points are important when selecting a Light Unit?

A

The Light Unit must provide high-contrast light at the target point on the observed object during illumination of the object. Therefore, it is important to understand the properties and surface conditions of the observed object, and also its shape, material, and color. It is also necessary to select the optimum radiation range and radiation angle considering the wavelength and convergence of the radiated light. The importance of these preconditions must be recognized before selecting a Light Unit.

Q What is the visual difference in images taken with high-convergence light and low-convergence light?

A

High-convergence light allows easy detection of changes in the surface and outline of the observed object, while low-convergence light provides a uniform view of the surface and outline of the observed object.

Q How does an LED Light Unit radiate high-convergence light?

A

Each LED Light Unit functions almost like a point light source, enabling a flexible control of the radiation range. Small LEDs with a suitable radiation angle can be arranged with precision in the direction of radiation to prepare a light source radiating high-convergence light.

Q What are the standards for the service life of an LED Light Unit?

A

CCS defines the radiant quantity of a Light Unit to be 100% when it is shipped from the factory. When this quantity drops to 50% or below, the service life of the Light Unit is said to be over. If, by any chance, the radiant quantity falls below 50% within one year from the day of shipping from the factory, we will repair or replace the Unit free of charge.

Q Can the service life of an LED Light Unit be increased?

A

LEDs are sensitive to heat and to changes in the temperature of the application environment. The heat generated by the LED Light Unit itself can also shorten the service life. The service life of an LED Light Unit is not affected by turning it ON and OFF frequently. An LED Light Unit also has a fast response, and these characteristics make it possible to control the generation of heat in the Unit by turning it ON or OFF as necessary, thereby increasing the service life of the LED Light Unit.

Q We would like to use some Light Units in our company, but are not sure what Light Units to use.

A

CCS recommends the following Light Units because the radiation range, radiation angle, and other characteristics are easy to understand.
We recommend the use of
